ORLANDO, Fla. – The suspect for running over former Orlando Police Officer William Anderson pleas for a shorter time in prison.
On July 13, 2015, Officer Anderson was hit by a car driven by a teenager. The incident, he said, almost took his life and he is now left permanently disabled. His condition after the event caused him to lose a job that he loves very much.
Almost two years after the incident, Anderson endures a permanently tattered spine. He uses a cane to walk the short distance that he manages to take, guided by the aid of a service dog.
The suspect is a teenager named Edward Kelty. An attempted second-degree murder was charged against him.
The event was caught on the dash cam of the police mobile. It shows Anderson stopping a carnapper, then moments later he was run down. He fired several shots, resulting to Kelty’s injury.
Anderson stated that he is concerned about the way the state attorney’s office is managing the case. The treatment he is getting from the office angers him.
William Anderson shared that he said no to a 15-year imprisonment for Kelty because he wants him tried. He reiterated that he informed the prosecutors in charge of the case several months ago that he will not support and will reject any plea deal offered to Kelty. However, the state attorney’s office failed to inform him that the plea notion is being brought up again this year.
William Anderson is very disappointed he was informed about the proceeding through the police department. He restated his right to know the progress of the case, and he reminded the attorney’s office that he should not be going through records and contacting clerks before he gets an update regarding the proceeding.
The hearing is set to happen on the first week of April.
